So you have an interest in hypnotherapy and wondering how it can help you. Woo woo is a term that seems to get bandied around a lot these days for things that may be considered…..well not quite mainstream. In my time in practice, I have even had people ask me if I am woo woo. Initially I couldn’t answer but a quick search on google for what exactly woo woo is, lead me to the urban dictionary which tells me that it is something about the supernatural and things that are unscientific. Hypnotherapy isn’t even close to being new age given it has been used throughout history and evolved over time! There is also some great science backing up its benefits. Now if we are talking about alternative therapies to the traditional medical model then in my view that is a bit more accurate.
There are some people out there that love alternative therapies and others that prefer the traditional medical model and then there are people like me who love to mix things up. When I was going through my own journey of fertility and facing what felt like wading through concrete, I had many a philosophical chat with my women’s health physician. What we both agreed on is that there is value in different treatments and often a multi modal approach can help to open some doors to possibility. Many people have had success using hypnotherapy to stop smoking or shed some unwanted kilograms and often people I see have had discussions with their GP about their health and incorporated hypnotherapy to help them make their journey to success a little more comfortable.
If we look at the science for a moment, as time goes by, more evidence is being developed to support the clinical applications in hypnosis. There is some serious science backing up the benefits of hypnotherapy with research being undertaken with increasing regularity. There have been studies noting the benefits of hypnosis in the treatments of pain control, fertility, pregnancy/labour, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, smoking cessation, weight management and anxiety to name a few. Research suggests that trials conducted using hypnosis have demonstrated that this form of intervention has its advantages in treating a variety of conditions.
Walking along that road we call life and sometimes we come across some sort of obstacle that leaves us wondering about where too next. Sometimes it can seem a bit like a balancing act as you figure out the complexities of life in all its simplicity.
